Writing around silence

By Leila Nadir · A fictional studio diary

Writing around silence

A note earns its place by changing what the silence means.

Choose a small vocabulary

For The Shape of Silence, we began with a few pitches and a deliberately narrow range of timbres. The restriction makes a change in register or attack feel consequential. A theme does not have to become louder to become more present.

Leave a door for the image

A score should not answer every question the picture asks. We sketch music against a sequence, then remove gestures that merely repeat the edit. The space left behind gives dialogue, a footstep or an unexpected breath room to matter.

A study, not a finished score

The playable cues on this website are original synthesized demonstrations. They sketch a musical mood with simple harmonic voices. In a full production, arrangement, live performance, recording and mix decisions would follow the dramatic needs of each scene.
