The weight of a small gesture

By Mara Sol · A fictional studio diary

The weight of a small gesture

A performance does not always need another pose. Sometimes it needs more time between the two you already have.

Start with the hesitation

The umbrella-maker in A Small Weather is most readable just before a decision. We explored a hand that starts to rise, stops, then tries again. That interruption tells us more than a perfectly executed action. In a performance study, a held pose can contain intention, doubt and a small change of heart.

Keep the useful imperfection

An asymmetrical antenna and a slightly late footfall introduce a sense of thought. The point is not random noise. Each variation should tell us something about effort, attention or temperament. If it cannot be explained through the character, it probably does not belong.

Let the edit listen

Timing is shared between animation and the cut. We review a shot inside its sequence, with an early sound sketch, before polishing the details. A beautiful isolated shot can still interrupt a scene. The sequence gets the final vote.
